My personal story with hosting services

Back in 2004, I was hosting a  profitable website on a large popular discount website hosting company, the type of business that you can not afford having down for much longer than an hour.

On a Sunday morning, I noticed that there was a critical failure in the main form, the one that drives most of the business and that I had been using for a while. I called technical support and nobody answered, so I decided to email them an urgent message. After a few hours, somebody answered saying that my request was received and that somebody would get back to me within 24 hours. Since I couldn't afford waiting that long, I kept calling until finally somebody answered the phone.

Even before getting all the details of the problem, they told me that it was probably an 'application' problem and that I needed to fix my programs. Never mind that the website had been running successfully up until Sunday morning, and that there had been no changes to the application. I had however recently 'upgraded' my hosting services, and was paying a little more to have more bandwidth and more disk capacity. And instead of getting more disk and capacity, I got a website that was practically out of service.

Over the next 5 days we exchanged phone calls and emails more than 10 times. They must have given me at least as many different explanations and solutions. All of them involved me re-uploading the website and changing different website settings. None of them worked.

As for the fact that I had just upgraded to a more 'robust' hosting package, it never crossed their minds that it could have caused the problem.

Finally, after 5 days of having my business virtually paralyzed, I called another hosting company and explained my problem. They immediately thought that the problem was with the 'upgrade'. Within 6 hours of our conversation, my website was up and running on the new host, including the hour that took to resolve this problem, which incidentally appeared on the new host again, but was promptly fixed.

They were courteous, quick and extremely knowledgeable. Since then, I moved all my websites to this new host, and I'm so satisfied with their services, that I'm doing business with them now.
